Children from 4th and 5th classes visited a local farm recently owned by Willie Keating as part of the Comeragh Uplands Communities Project. Farmers from the locality spoke to the children about the work they do involving sheep on the Comeragh mountains and how important it is that sheep farming continues in the area. The children learned about the different breeds of sheep, the plants they eat on the mountains and general sheep health. They were given a demonstration on how to shear a sheep and a display of a sheepdog at work.
Caitríona from Teagasc gave a very informative talk about the biodiversity of the Comeraghs and Kevin from Coillte talked about forestry in the area and the wildlife associated with it. Refreshments were then provided by Willie and Rachel and the farming team. A wonderful day was had by all
